One person mode scales both the number of enemies and the stats they have for single player. Some quests are only available in solo player (the story missions) and some are only available in multi-player But your drops and xp are the same rate. So don't worry too much!

Can you check to see if you have steam running at the same time? I know that if I try to use a controller while steam is on it can cause some weird interactions.

No add-ons required for it, you can re-bind the controls in the settings in game ^^. If you use steam, I do recommend you close it out, as it can cause some strange interactions with controller inputs. I use either Bluetooth or my controller plugged in and it works both ways :3
