Are you on a portable device (Like a laptop) or a Desktop? You may opt to connect to a different network to see if it will allow you to get passed the character select if you are using a laptop.

Do you have any other systems in your home/office/whatever to see if those systems are having problems getting past the character select screen? This would help narrow down if it may be a network problem.

What anti-virus are you using? Some Anti-Virus programs may silently delete or modify items that are started. I know mine closed it out and deleted SHPsoBB.exe causing my game to lose its mind requiring a reinstall.

I am Help Desk Support for an IT Company Based out of Wichita Falls TX. I am currently working in one of their satellite offices. Beats the crap out of working at Dell. Dell = Tech Support for Dell Products with "Best Effort" Help Desk = Fix all kinds of "wtf" problems.
